so here we are again.. another beautiful day in Athens at kafeneon.. slow in the afternoon.. as i just watched all that happens across the street at the court house.. the normal occurrences… some yelling.. some crying and of course scenes like this…now dont worry human rights watchdogs.. this is just family transport for some here!
this nice lady came by to see what kafeneon is all about.. she couldnt stay for coffee cause she was off to work.. but hopefully she’ll come back by for a FREE cup of Greek Coffee!
had some time today so i printed the signs for the final week and rearranged them on the window… WOW … A LOT GOING ON!
This guy Antonakis came by to see what was up.. he heard about kafeneon through some friends and had even seen the blog…seems to be enjoying himself eh?
Els cruised by to see the show and drop off some announcements for the show she curated called Selective Knowledge.. april 2- july 20.. GO SEE IT! here she is enjoying a conversation and an amazing cup of FREE Greek Coffee with Antonakis
Olga came by to catch up and see the show…
and of course some Greek Coffee
youve maybe heard of the Minoan Snake Goddess from Crete.. now i present to you the Cretan Coffee Goddess!
and finally Yiannis and Alexandros, two guys from around the way who have seen crowds and such in kafeneon decided to finally stop on by…they are musicians and after a great conversation and FREE Greek Coffee.. Alexandros mentioned he was inspired and will write a song about the place! I hope so!
well thats it.. another great day at kafeneon.. Evas show is up only till 8pm today so if you havent had a chance.. COME ON BY..now off to do the dishes…

An early morning at kafeneon with Jennifer and Toby who came by around 9am to look at the space and discuss their performance/involvement on THE FINAL SHOW closing night on MARCH 31st 8:30pm… they also got the opportunity to see Eva’s show which is up today and tomorrow hours 12-8pm..
and of course.. they had to partake in the amazing FREE Greek Coffee…
I had some great visitors today.. including this little fella.. who i named NEON… here he is asking “what is this place” “where are you from”
Dafni also stopped by to collect documentation from the Beautiful Like an American show … Neon seems interested…
didnt think it wise to give Neon coffee.. but he did enjoy an amazing FREE cookie
This woman came in today to see the show… her name is Myrto she too is an artists…
Dafni enjoying her FREE Greek coffee…
and some conversation about art with Myrto…
Then is so happened my wonderful cousin also named Myrto came in to see me and the show and for some amazing Greek Coffee with her man Tolga
I learned through the two that even in Greece Greek Coffee was referred to as Turkish Coffee until they started calling it Greek Coffee due to the political situation in the region in 1974… interesting eh?? eh… whatever… lemme just drink my Greek Coffee….
This lovely woman with a lovely name Evalina came in today as well.. I had met her the first week of kafeneon.. almost crushing her hand with my firm MidWest American handshake.. she doesnt drink coffee.. She also came to the space the day before again mentioning she didnt drink coffee.. so I told her if she returned I would make her a cup of Greek Mountain Tea.. she mentioned she was from Volos.. interestingly enough.. the mountain tea i made her was also from Volos…
The cake on the table was kindly provided by Dafni.. dellllicious… here we are discussing reading the future in the grounds of the Greek Coffee…
Evalina was nice enough to let me take our picture together… she is a very kind lady… and she kindly donated some money towards the kafeneon “Month Book” ….
and you should too!!!! (see the button on the right!) thanks for coming by everyone.. we are officially in the final week of kafeneon…

So here we are with documentation of Evas beautiful installation here at kafeneon.. the show is still up Monday and Tuesday 12-8.. so check it out!! This is the last week of kafeneon so keep tabs for the upcoming events… OK.. starting from the front room we see a skillfully installed series of correspondences (email, skype) and drawings which tell a story of an illusive relationship which sets the tone for the theme of the overall installation…
heres how it looks in the evening… fannnntastic…
turning around we see the title of the show written in lipstick (in Dutch) on the mirror – ik hou van je maar ik verdien je niet (i love you but I dont deserve you) and the bicycle (the mode transportation for this illusive affair)
close up
as we enter the second room we see a series of small vacation photos along side a suspended, ghostly lit object (which the artist tells me represents a bedroom)
close up…
another view of the second room with the suspension in the foreground…and vacation photos in the background
and another view of the vacation photos..
turning around…. in the third room we see a large print of Amsterdam courtesy of google earth, with borders marked in red tape that show the geographical evolution of the relationship…
the map room…
close up of the borders..
coming back out into the space for one more look
GREAT SHOW EVA!!! COME AND SEE IT SOON!.. and please donate (to the right) to the kafeneon “month book” which will chronicle the entire month of events at kafeneon…

A slow day here in kafeneon, but of course… its not how many people take advantage of the Free Greek Coffee but the type of interactions that take place.. Panathinaikos had a game so there were a ton of people peeking through the window… a few “whats this place” and “Where are you from” interactions but finally Petros came in. Petros lives bellow kafeneon. I have met him twice before by waking him up (and probably his whole family), once when installing the Beautiful Like an American show at 4:30 in the morning… and again.. deinstalling the show at 1:30 in the morning… lets just say we didnt quite meet on great terms. Well Petros decided to stop by and see Eva’s show. Letting bygone be bygones.. he took advantage of the Greek Coffee (although do to having only one tooth.. he passed on the cookie) and some conversation. I took a great picture of him.. but unfortunately deleted the pictures by accident when documenting Eva’s show.. So.. to keep true to my desire to chronical everyone who passes by.. I made a memory drawing of Petros this morning (pretty darn good likeness). Here it is…enjoy..
and as promised here is the little mention in Athinorama about kafeneon…
stay tuned for documentation of Evas show which I took last night.. coming soon!

This weeks lecture was amazing featuring a multimedia, performance installation live presentation by into the pill and an amazingly informative, intense and performative presentation about Sierra Leone by Anthea Zervos… so lets begin… with the gathering crowd who defied the odds of a general strike making Lecture #3 the largest lecture to date.. well done folks…
all smiles as i introduce the nights lecturers..
I SAID.. ALL SMILES EIRENE
Thats better.. thanks Katerina
SO… lights off.. and we begin.. with Yiannis behind the screen starting to juggle a soccer ball as Yiannis speaks over the microphone…
in the space are two video projections.. one of an interchange in Greece and the other the fans of Panathinaikos carrying on..
an installation shot through the mirror.. showing the general setup and crowd…
So.. Yiannis stops juggling the football (soccer ball just to clarify to those across the Atlantic).. and Yiannis comes out and starts writing graphs and statistics while Yiannis takes his turn on the microphone reading some Theory…
as the lecture/performance/presentation carries on Yiannis and Yiannis take turns on the mic.. and alternate juggling the football and writing on the screen…here is Yiannis juggling behind the screen of growing statistics
Yiannis again adding to the density of the screen…
mirror install view…
Hey there Jennifer…
Another Yiannis… aka De Niro listening attentively.. “YOU TALKING TO ME?”
and the attentive crowd…
Thanos intensly listening
so with the screen density arriving at a maximum..
and Yiannis juggling the ball.. i think he hit 100 without the ball touching the floor..
the lecture ended.. Time for intermission..
the crowd appreciating the work of Into the Pill NICE WORK GUYS…
Fellow Fulbrighter Tracy obviously inspired by the lecture… FANCYYYYYY WORK!
Yiannis helping reset the kafeneon for Antheas lecture.. CANT WAIT…
Without further ado .. Anthea Zervos shows that you dont need projectors.. microphones.. or theater lights to deliver a message… when you have theatricality and intense experiences…I am attaching links throughout this post, curtsey of Anthea for further information check them out.
Anthea starts out explaining the trajectory in her life that led her to Freetown Sierra Leone…and jumps right into war crimes.. poverty.. and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which Anthea informs me that this link “also has links to other info on SL, as well as the full final Report. There is a chapter in the Report on the National Vision which I co-authored with one of my colleagues. ”
The crowd all ears as Anthea delivers….
Anthea also talked about the Special Court For Sierra Leone and the talented and concerened citizens who shared their visions mostly through artistic means (due to massive illiteracy) people like the Sierra Leone Refugee Allstars who Anthea tells me “This is an amazing band that came together in the refugee camps in Guinea. An awesome documentary film was made about them. “
An amazingly honest and emotional lecture you can see the passion in Antheas face..
One more link for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia which Anthea also worked for. From what we learned Sierra Leone is an amazingly catastrophic place with its people wanting and begging for change.. one more of Anthea fielding great questions from the audience…
Well thats it for this episode of kafeneon… I hope you all enjoyed it.. here i am with the fantastic participants… thanks to all for coming and remember to donate (to the right) towards the wonderful cause of the kafeneon “Month Book”.. and dont forget.. to check back often only 2 weeks left and tons of events including an opening for Eva Michalaki Friday the 21st of March at 8:30… PEACE…
closing time… wheeewwwwww… tired…..
